Azerbaijan’s economically active population amounted to 5.27 million people as of early June 2021, and 4.91 million of them are employed people, Trend reports referring to the Azerbaijani State Statistical Committee.
According to the committee, the number of hired employees made up 1.68 million people, 913,600 people were involved in the public sector of the economy, and 764,800 people - in the private sector. The number of employees in the oil and gas sector reached 32,700 people, while in the non-oil sector – 1.64 million people.
Some 23.4 percent of the employees were working in the production sector, 7.4 percent of them in the processing sector, 7.2 percent in the construction sector, 3.4 percent in agriculture, forestry and fish breeding sector, 1.9 percent - in the mining industry and in the field of water supply, waste treatment and recycling, 1.6 percent - in the production and distribution of electricity, gas and steam.
Some 19.7 percent of those employed in the services sector work in the field of education, 18.5 percent – in trade and vehicle repair sphere, 8.3 percent - medical and social services, 6.7 percent – public administration and defense, as well as social security, 5.3 percent - in the field of administrative and additional services, and 4.5 percent - transport and storage facilities.
Moreover, 3.4 percent of the employed people work in the fields of professional, scientific and technical activities, 3.2 percent - in the fields of recreation, entertainment and art, 1.8 percent – information and communications, 1.7 percent - financial and insurance activities, 1.5 percent – tourist accommodation and catering, 1.1 percent – in the services sector in other spheres, and 0.9 percent - in the area of operations related to real estate.
The volume of the gross domestic product (GDP) of Azerbaijan in the first 5 months of 2021 increased by 0.8 percent compared to the same period of last year and reached 31.5 billion manat ($18.5 billion).
