TEHRAN, Iran, Aug. 15
Trend:
The head of the Iranian Fisheries Organization called for using the successful experience of the Caspian Sea Convention in the establishment of the Persian Gulf and the Sea of Oman Convention.
This will be the successful experience of convergence between the Caspian littoral states to preserve the Caspian Sea ecosystem, aquatic reserves, prevention of water pollution, and sustainable exploitation of the sea, Nabiullah Khounmirzaie said Trend reports citing the official website of Ministry of Agriculture Jihad.
He expressed hope that the previous experiences will be used for the establishment of a similar convention with the Persian Gulf and the Sea of Oman neighboring states.
"The establishment of an international convention in the Persian Gulf and the Sea of Oman is on the agenda of the Iranian Fisheries Organization,” he noted.
“The Caspian Sea is part of Iran's historical identity and culture,” he said. “Convergence between the Caspian Sea states formed via the Convention on the Protection of the Marine Environment of the Caspian Sea in 2003.”
He noted that the Caspian states, including Iran, Azerbaijan, Russia, Kazakhstan, and Turkmenistan, have signed the convention and the following protocols.
The Deputy Minister of Agriculture Jihad said that all the signatory countries to this convention are committed to preserving the ecosystem of the Caspian Sea.
Khounmirzaei noted that Iran is trying to implement measures such as banning sturgeon fishing based on international conventions signed with the Caspian Sea states and banning aquatic fishing according to the agreed calendar of the Iranian Fisheries.
