The Secretary of Tehran's Food Wholesaler's Union said that Covid-19 and inflation have reduced the demand for food by 30 to 35 percent in the last 5 months compared to the same period last year.
In the last five months, the Family Food Basket has faced increases in prices, Ghasemali Hassani said, Trend reports citing ISNA.
“Iranian rice has increased in price by about 38 percent since the beginning of the current Iranian year (started on March 21),” he said adding that the edible oil price also grew by 35 percent in June, which led to a decrease in demand.
He noted that the price of sugar has also experienced a 90 percent increase since the beginning of the year.
Hassani went on to say that the price of cereals has also increased by 10 to 30 percent since the beginning of the current Iranian year (started on March 21) due to drought.
He cited that the Covid 19, high prices, and reduced purchasing power of the people have caused the demand for food to be reduced by 30 to 35 percent compared to the same period last year.
