Iran has started mine explorations on a 400,000-sq. kilometer area in the city of Birjand (South Khorasan Province), said Deputy Minister of Industries Mines and Trade Vajihollah Jafari, Trend reports citing IRNA.

The first phase of explorations has started thanks to a 2.5 billion rial ($59 million) credit, said Jafari.

A total of 60 exploration groups started to collect basic geology data. Iranian Mines & Mining Industries Development & Renovation (IMIDRO) has provided funding for the project, while airborne geophysical data is being gathered by the Geological Survey and Mineral Exploration of Iran.

The project will be completed in five years and would trace new potentials and exploration sites that would further be assigned to Iran's private sector.
