BAKU, Azerbaijan, April 17. A total of 140,000 tons of wheat are expected to be purchased from farmers under a guarantee in the Tehran Province (northern Iran), during the current wheat harvesting season in Iran (as of March 24, 2022), Director General of the Iranian Government Trading Corporation’s branch in Tehran Province Abbas Arshadi said, Trend reports citing the GTC’s website.

According to Arshadi, wheat has been planted on 46,000 hectares in Tehran Province. Taking into account the weather conditions, wheat harvesting season in the province will start on June 22.

The director general added that 11 centers will be established in the province for the guaranteed purchase of wheat from farmers. In total, the centers could buy 400,000 tons of wheat.

“Due to the drought in the country for last Iranian year (March 21, 2021 through March 20, 2022), a total of 100,000 tons of wheat were purchased from farmers in Tehran Province,” he said.

Arshadi also noted that about 3,200 tons of rapeseed were purchased from farmers in the Tehran Province within last Iranian year, which is an increase of about 40 percent compared to the preceding Iranian year (March 20, 2020 through March 20, 2021). The volume of rapeseed to be purchased in the province is expected to increase this year as well.

In general, 9 million tons of wheat are expected to be purchased in Iran in the current Iranian year (from March 20, 2022, through March 20, 2023). Of this, about 5.5 million tons are expected to be purchased by the GTC.

The price of 1 kg of wheat was set up at 115,000 rials (about $2.74) for the current Iranian year.

A number of products, including wheat, tea, rice, and other products are purchased from farmers by GTC under a guarantee in Iran.
