BAKU, Azerbaijan, May 11. The transit of goods through Iran is planned to reach 20 million tons by the end of the current Iranian year (March 21, 2022 through March 20, 2023), Iranian Deputy Minister of Roads and Urban Development of Shahriar Afandizadeh said, Trend reports citing the ministry.

According to Afandizadeh, various meetings were held to increase transit. He added that the activation of the East-West and North-South transport corridors will allow increased transit of goods through the country.

The deputy minister noted that with the cooperation of the Iranian Ports and Maritime Organization (PMO), the Road and Transport Organization, Islamic Republic of Iran Railways, the Iran Customs Administration (IRICA) and the private sector, it will be possible to increase the transit to the mentioned figure.

“Also, in order to increase in transit of goods through Iran, a number of changes will be made in the law on combating goods and currency smuggling, and transit-related processes will be transparent,” he noted.

In total, 12.5 million tons of goods were transited through Iran over the last Iranian year (March 21, 2021 through March 20, 2022), which is an increase of 68 percent compared to the preceding Iranian year (March 20, 2020 through March 20, 2021).
