Iran, Tajikistan trade turnover increase

TEHRAN, Iran, August 16. Iran and Tajikistan trade ties have increased by 600 percent during the first four months of the current Iranian year(started March 21, 2022), the chairman of the Iran-Tajikistan Chamber of Commerce Mohammad Hossein Roshanak told Trend.

He underlined obstacles in past years that affected Iran's direct export to Tajikistan including the disputes between Turkmenistan and Tajikistan that forced Iran to re-export goods to Tajikistan from Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan instead of using the Turkmenistan route.

The other issue was that the export statistics that were not precise since Iran re-exported goods from intermediary countries to Tajikistan, he said.

Iran and Tajikistan trade suddenly jumped by 600 percent after Turkmenistan and Tajikistan solved their customs and cargo transit disagreements, he noted.

Official statistics show a 480 percent increase in Iran and Tajikistan's non-oil trade during the first four months of the Iranian year, but the real figures indicate a 600 percent rise, he pointed out.

Iran currently exports non-oil commodities to Tajikistan via Turkmenistan, he explained.

The Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi's visit to Tajikistan was a big boost in improving ties between the two countries and following Russia and Iran's pursuits, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan resumed relations that facilitated trade.

Iran's major non-oil export to Tajikistan include food items such as cake and cookies, construction materials, small industrial machinery, agriculture products, animal farming tools, machine woven carpets, and detergents.

According to the official, Iran mostly imports cotton from Tajikistan that increased by 200 percent.
