BAKU, Azerbaijan, January 23. Overall, 1,176 tons of bony fish worth 2.3 trillion rials (about $54.7 million) were caught in the Caspian Sea in Iran’s Mazandaran Province from the beginning of the current fishing season from the Caspian Sea in Iran (October 9, 2022) to January 22, 2023, Director General of the Iran Fisheries Organization for Mazandaran Province Ghasem Karimzadeh told IRNA, Trend reports.

Karimzadeh stressed that this is an increase of 30 percent in volume compared to the same period last Iranian year.

“Of the mentioned volume, 57 percent accounted for mullet, 27 percent for Caspian kutum, 8 percent for carp, and 8 percent for other fish species,” he added.

The director general noted that the main part of the bony fish catch from the Caspian Sea accounted for mullet, Caspian kutum and carp. Mullet is mainly caught in autumn and early winter, and as of the end of January, the catch of Caspian kutum starts to increase.

Generally, 50 fishing companies and about 4,000 fishermen work in the province. Fishing has a fundamental role in the income and livelihood of the population in Mazandaran Province. Fishing in Mazandaran Province will last till April 20, 2023.
