BAKU, Azerbaijan, January 23. Approximately 1.7 million tons of sugar beet worth 33.1 trillion rials (about $788 million) were purchased from farmers in Iran’s West Azerbaijan Province in the north-west of the country, in the current season (during spring and autumn), Head of the Agricultural Department of West Azerbaijan Province, Khosrov Shahbazi told reporters, Trend reports citing IRNA.
Shahbazi said that so far, 66 percent of the money for the purchased sugar beet has been paid to farmers, while the remaining money will be paid soon.
The official added that the most amount of sugar beet was bought in Piranshahr, Bukan, Miandoab, Naqadeh counties of the province.
According to him, there are 5 factories for sugar processing in the province.
In Iran, some products such as rice, sugar beet, wheat, and tea are purchased from farmers by the Government Trade Corporation (GTC) of Iran under a guarantee and paid for in installments.
