Lexus LS 460 to get world's first rear-collision detection

(autoinsidernews) - Lexus has provided details about its Pre-crash Safety System for its LS flagship sedan, which includes protection from both front and rear collision, the first in the world. The systems will be available in Toyotas home market LS 460, reports Trend.

The system uses a rear-facing radar sensor to detect a vehicle approaching from behind. If the system determines an imminent rear collision, it flashes the hazard lights to warn the driver of the rear vehicle. If the vehicle continues to approach, it detects the position of the front seat passengers heads and adjusts the position of the vehicles headrests to help reduce the risk of whiplash neck injuries.

The frontal Pre-crash Safety System in the LS 460 is a worlds first combination of radar and a stereo camera to detect not only vehicles and obstacles, but also pedestrians. At night, the system is supported by near-infrared projector in the headlights.
