Azerbaijan, Baku, August 7 / Trend , R.Hafizoglu, E.Ismaylov /

The agreement reached between Turkey and Russia on South Stream pipeline project shows that Turkey is trying to protect itself in case of non-realization Nabucco gas pipeline, Professor of International Relations of Turkish Ishik University, Bulent Aras, said on August 7.

"The agreement reached between Turkey and Russia on South Stream project contain moments that do not draw attention. Other projects passing through Turkey are under the control of Europe. The agreement on South Stream project will not create obstacles for realization of Nabucco project. "The main goal of all three projects is to deliver gas to the European market," said Aras.

Turkey loses nothing from reaching agreement on this project, Aras said, because Turkey is not a gas producer, but a country, which through its territory transports gas to Europe and the world market.

Recently, Russia and Turkey signed an inter-governmental protocol on cooperation in gas sphere.

Signing this document will allow Russia to conduct exploration work in Turkey on South Stream project. Also in the protocol confirms plans to build Blue Stream-2 gas pipeline. Turkey displayed an interest in Blue Stream-2 project, which envisages establishing a pipeline on the basis of the current Blue Stream, via which gas is supplied to Turkey, RBK reported.

All permissions for the construction of South Stream will be obtained by November 1, next year. These are authorizations including by the Turkish side. By 1 November this year, all permissions will be provided for exploration work.

The South Stream project envisages establishing a new route of gas supply to Europe via the Black Sea.

NABUCCO is projected main 3,300-kilometer-gas pipeline avoiding Russia from Central Asia to EU countries, mainly, Austria and Germany. Project capacity is 26-32 billion cubic meters of gas per year. Construction is planned to complete by 2013.

OMV Gas GmbH (Austria), Botas (Turkey), Bulgargaz (Bulgaria), S.N.T.G.N. Transgaz S.A. (Romania), MOL Natural Gas Transmission Company Ltd. (Hungary), RWE (Germany) participate in consortium on gas pipeline construction.
