The State Oil Company of the Azerbaijan Republic (SOCAR) launched the drilling of the first exploration well at the Umid gas field in the Azerbaijani sector of the Caspian Sea this week, a source in SOCAR said on Aug.14. The company plans to develop the field with its own funds.

SOCAR conducts exploration work on the Caspian Sea to increase gas production in Azerbaijan.

Drilling in the field has begun and drilling operations are proceeding normally, the source said.

The depth of the first exploration well will hit 6,500 meters. It is planned that 4,000 meters of well will be drilled, the source said.

Earlier, SOCAR completed the construction of the Umid-1 platform. The Umid-1 platform, built on the base of unfinished Chiraq-6 platform, is the largest facility within the program. Its height is 72 meters. The platform was installed in 15 kilometers from the Bulla Deniz field at a depth of 58 meters. A total of six gas wells are expected to be drilled from the platform.

The total expected gas reserves in the Umid field are estimated at 300 billion cubic meters and the expected gas condensate reserves are estimated at 30-40 million tons.
