The final decision on the pipeline route to transport Azerbaijani gas to Europe will be a landmark for European gas supply security, chairman of GasNaturally François-Régis Mouton said in interview with Natural Gas Europe.

"The decision on the final route, expected in June this year, will be a landmark for diversification and security of gas supply in Europe," Mouton said.

According to Mouton, in 2012 important steps have been taken towards the realisation of the Southern Gas Corridor.

The Southern Corridor is one of the EU's priority energy projects aimed at diversifying the routes and sources of energy supply, thereby increasing secure delivery. Gas which will be produced during the second stage of the Azerbaijani Shah Deniz field development is considered as the main source for the Southern Gas Corridor projects.

Azerbaijan plans to export 10 billion cubic meters of gas to Europe within the second stage of Shah Deniz filed development.

Currently, the Shah Deniz consortium is considering two variants for its gas transportation to Europe - Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP) and Nabucco West. The final decision on the pipeline route will be made in June, 2013.
