Turkmenistan working to electrify railways

The work is being gradually carried out in Turkmenistan to electrify railways, Railway Transport Minister Azat Atamyradov said during a government working meeting, the Turkmen government said in a message.

Measures are also being taken on ensuring control over the operation of railway transport, strengthening the material and technical base of the industry, raising the level of passenger service, the message said.

Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov drew attention to the role of Turkmen-Japanese cooperation in this area and ordered to explore the possibilities of practical application of global experience.

The government delegation of Turkmenistan has recently held a number of business meetings in Tokyo, in particular the meeting with the President of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) Shinichi Kitaoka.

The JICA expressed its interest in collaborating on projects with a social focus.

From this point of view, the Turkmen side put forward a proposal to consider the possibility of participating in the project of modernization of the railways of Turkmenistan as a socially significant project aimed at providing high-quality transport services to the population of the country.

It was earlier reported that Turkmenistan is preparing to purchase modern locomotives powered by electric motors.
