Atomstroyexport JSC (part of Rosatom) has begun the second phase of engineering and exploration work on the construction of the first nuclear power plant (NPP) in Uzbekistan, Trend reports with reference to the press service of Uzatom agency.
In early September 2018, Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev and Head of the government of Uzbekistan Abdulla Aripov signed an agreement on cooperation in the construction of nuclear power plants in Uzbekistan.
State Corporation Rosatom plans to build a complex of two generation 3+ units with VVER-1200 reactor units. The site near the Tuzkan lake in the Jizzakh region was selected as the priority site for the station.
"On June 29 of the current year, the second stage of engineering and exploration work began on the territory chosen for the construction of a nuclear power plant near the Lake Tuzkan of the Jizzakh region," the statement reads.
The press service reported that Atomstroyexport JSC specialists will carry out geophysical and seismological work in this area. "Experts will study the results of geological and geophysical surveys, on the basis of which the work on the development of a technical design of a nuclear power plant will continue," the agency stated.
In mid-May, the Ministry of Energy of Uzbekistan signed a "road map" with Rosatom for the implementation of the second stage of NPP construction, which includes the stages of preparation and coordination of contracts for the project implementation.
President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyev in February approved the concept of developing nuclear energy in the country for 2019-2029. Its main goal is the construction and start of safe operation of nuclear power plants with a total capacity of 2.4 GW by 2030. Construction of the station is scheduled to begin in 2022 with the involvement of a loan from the Russian government.
