By Leman Zeynalova – Trend:

Current positioning of Spanish Enagás foresees investments in Hydrogen, Biogas & Biomethane projects in the 2020-2026 period, the company told Trend.

The company’s investments will be concentrated on:

1. Industrial scale demonstration projects

2. Projects for the decarbonization of the various economic sectors and Power-to-gas projects for the coupling between the gas and electrical sector, especially in regions where the energy transition can have a greater impact.

3. Projects investing in proprietary technology: Direct generation of hydrogen from solar energy.

“We participate in these projects with different industry/private and public partners. Regarding hydrogen developments, we are already working on 12 projects that will involve a total investment of 1.5 billion euros for the period 2021-2023, with several industry representatives, where private-public partnerships will be a key asset to go forward,” said Enagas.

Some of these projects related to hydrogen are:

- Green Hysland project (Mallorca), that envisages the development of a plant for the generation of green hydrogen from renewable photovoltaic energy to be used mainly in mobility. It started negotiations for an EU grant agreement valued at 10 million euros what would constitute the second largest grant by the Fuel Cells and Hydrogen Joint Undertaking (European Commission body) to a green hydrogen project and the largest grant ever offered to a Mediterranean country.

- Green Crane initiative for the development of a hydrogen corridor from the South to the North of Europe, which will contribute to the decarbonisation of different economic sectors. This project will also strengthen the European energy system and position Spain as a gateway for hydrogen in Europe with the existing storage and transmission infrastructures.

- Sun2HY, Development of photoelectrochemical technology for the direct production of H2 from solar energy

“Projects like these ones will contribute to position Spain as the hydrogen hub in southern Europe.

On the other hand our aim is to continue supporting LNG as a more sustainable fuel for mobility, especially for the maritime sector, focussing on LNG bunkering and small scale services through CORE LNGas hive project and its follow up under the flagship strategy LNGHive2,” said the company.
