Iran’s electricity generation capacity spikes

Iran's electricity generation capacity increased by 2.2 percent to 85,313 megawatt-hours in the last Iranian year (from March 20, 2020 through March 20, 2021), compared to the preceding Iranian year (from March 21, 2019 through March 19, 2020), Trend reports citing the report of Ministry of Energy of Iran.

According to the report, 1,804 megawatt-hours of electricity was added to Iran's electricity generation potential last year.

"In addition, 4 gas units with the generation capacity of 685 megawatt-hours of electricity, 5 combined cycle with the capacity of 794 megawatt-hours of electricity, and small gas units with the capacity of 270 megawatt-hours of electricity were put into operation in the last Iranian year," the report said.

As well as alternative renewable energy power units with the generation capacity of 53 megawatt-hours of electricity, and a small hydroelectric power unit with the capacity of 2 megawatt-hours of electricity were put into operation, the report said.

According to the report, Iran's electricity generation increased by 5.1 percent to 343 billion kilowatt-hours in the last Iranian year compared to the preceding year.

"Of this volume, 337 billion kilowatt-hours were generated by power plants of the Iranian Energy Ministry and private sector and the rest by large industrial facilities’ power plants," the report said.

"At the peak period of last year (summer), electricity generation exceeded 58,000 megawatt-hours. This is an increase of 5.8 percent compared to the peak period of preceding Iranian year. Furthermore, the generation of hydroelectric power plants, nuclear power plants and alternative renewable power plants decreased by 15.2 percent to 9,090 megawatt-hours.
