Azerbaijan has great opportunities for wind energy dev't - expert

BAKU, Azerbaijan, Apr. 15

By Fidan Babayeva – Trend:

Current comprehensive projects of the Russian State Atomic Energy Corporation (ROSATOM) in the field of renewable, primarily wind energy are of great importance for Azerbaijan, Deputy Director of the International Institute for Energy Policy and Diplomacy of the Moscow State Institute of International Relations, expert of the Institute’s Center for Sustainable Development Igbal Guliyev told Trend.

According to Guliyev, in 2018-2019, Rosatom discussed with the leadership of Azerbaijan proposals to increase cooperation in the nuclear field, which included a project to build a nuclear power plant in Azerbaijan.

“The ROSATOM division - Rusatom International Network and Azerbaijan’s National Nuclear Research Center CJSC has previously signed a protocol of intentions on training and organizing joint scientific work: conducting fundamental and applied research, initiating symposia, seminars, expert meetings, technical tours and consultations, as well as the implementation of the development of joint projects,” Guliyev said.

At present, Azerbaijan's energy priorities provide for the large-scale development of renewable energy, said the expert.

“Nevertheless, the Breakthrough project being implemented by ROSATOM, which provides for the development, creation and industrial implementation of a closed nuclear fuel cycle based on fast neutron reactors and, which is actually a new technological platform in large-scale nuclear power, in the future, will possibly be of interest to Azerbaijani colleagues,” Guliyev emphasized.

ROSATOM is a diversified holding that unites assets in the energy sector, mechanical engineering, and construction. Its strategy is to develop low-carbon generation, including wind energy.

It is the national leader in electricity production (over 20 percent of the total output) and ranks first in the world in terms of the portfolio of orders for the construction of nuclear power plants: 35 power units in 12 countries are at different stages of implementation.
