Kazakhstan suggests co-op with S. Korea in modernization of thermal power plants

Kazakhstan President Kasym-Zhomart Tokayev proposed the South Korean Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction cooperation as part of the modernization of Kazakhstan thermal power plants (TPP), Trend reports with reference to Kazakh media.

The issue was discussed between Kasym-Zhomart Tokayev, President of Samsung Electronics Institute and President of Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction during an official visit of the Kazakh president to Korea.

In a conversation with the head of Samsung Electronics, Tokayev touched on digitalization and technological development through science and innovation. In addition, Tokayev called the promising direction of cooperation to introduce the system of ‘smart cities’.

According to the president, Kazakhstan is interested in the use of transport management technologies, preventing road traffic accidents, remote data transmission.

Further, Tokayev met with the head of Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction and thanked him for his contribution to the development of the economy of Kazakhstan. The president also noted the successful construction of a 310 MW gas turbine power plant in the Atyrau region.

He added that Kazakhstan knows about the purpose of South Korea to become the world leader in the development of green energy with a significant proportion of hydrogen generation.

"Currently, you are preparing a plan for transferring three Korean cities to hydrogen energy. Today, in Kazakhstan, special attention is paid to the development of alternative energy sources. We plan to bring the share of alternative energy to 30 percent by 2030, of which 15 percent will be carried out using renewable energy sources. For this, in the near future, we plan to implement projects with a capacity of 3-4 GW of electrical energy. Therefore, your suggestions are of great interest to us," said Tokayev.

He proposed South Korean company cooperation as part of the modernization of Kazakhstan TPP and the expansion of the Karabatan complex. In turn, the head of Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction expressed his readiness to work on joint projects in the field of alternative energy sources.

In addition, during the visit of the President of Kazakhstan, it became known that the Consulate General of Kazakhstan will open in Busan.
