Kazakhstan sees increase in electricity consumption as outcome of illegal mining

BAKU, Azerbaijan, Feb. 11

Trend:

Electricity consumption in Kazakhstan has grown by six percent in 2021 as a result of illegal crypto mining, Trend reports citing the government of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

This became known during the government meeting chaired by Kazakhstan's Prime Minister Alikhan Smailov.

Thus, in order to avoid growing scarcity of electricity in the country, Smailov gave specific instructions to the relevant ministries related to the need for legislative regulation of this activity, and the introduction of licensing.

Currently, the necessary amendments to the legislation are being developed.
