Azerikimya State Company Offers to Increase Import Tariffs for Several Products

Oil&Gas Materials 17 October 2006 13:53 (UTC +04:00)

Azerikimya State Company requested the Azerbaijani Government to consider increasing the tariffs for several types of chemical products (hydrate of sodium, dichloramine, propylene, isopropyl alcohol, liquid chlorine, butadiene, etc.). By doing so it will support the development of the internal chemical enterprises, a government source told Trend.

Attracting investments into the chemical industry would allow the quality of the production to be raised and bring enterprises to full capacity. Due to the use of old equipment, Azerikimya State Company, cover only 20-25% of the project capacity which in turn does not allow local enterprises to compete with imported products. Improvement of the production will also lead to a decrease of prices for energy carriers. Furthermore, no equipment is available to ascertain whether products conform to international standards.

Today more than 100 enterprises function in the Country and 70-80% is owned by the State. Due to the existence of such problems, the growth rate in the chemical industry decreased whereby in 2005 it totaled 2.3%, in 2000, 3.4% and in 1995, 3%.
