BAKU, Azerbaijan, October 9. The COP29 Presidency has announced the appointment of ministerial representatives (pairs) for adaptation, mitigation, and Article 6 [of the Paris Agreement under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change], Trend reports via the COP29 website.
According to the website, the appointment focuses on helping guide and inform political consultations on the above topics at Pre-COP29.
"The COP29 Ministerial Pairs are playing an important role in escalating political engagement ahead of COP29 in Baku and raising the key priorities of the COP29 Presidency up the global political agenda. Eamon Ryan, Minister for the Environment, Climate, and Communications of Ireland, and Franz Tattenbach, Minister of Environment and Energy of Costa Rica, have been appointed as the Ministerial Pair on Adaptation.
The COP29 Presidency has appointed Tore O. Sandvik, Minister of Climate and Environment of Norway, and Dion Travers George, Minister of Forestry, Fisheries, and the Environment of South Africa, as the Ministerial Pair on Mitigation.
Grace Fu Hai Yien, Minister for Sustainability and the
Environment of Singapore, and Simon Watts, Minister of Climate
Change of New Zealand, have been appointed as the Ministerial Pair
under Article 6. The Ministerial Pair will guide political
consultations on Article 6 and build momentum to finalize its
implementation at COP29.
The announcement coincides with the appointment of Chris Bowen, the
Australian Minister for Climate Change and Energy, and Yasmine
Fouad, the Egyptian Minister of Environment Mitigation, as the
Ministerial Pair on the NCQG, also known as the new collective
quality goal.
Francesco Carvaro, Special Envoy for Climate Change of Italy, and Zulfiya Suleimanova, Advisor to the President of Kazakhstan and Special Representative for International Environmental Cooperation of Kazakhstan as the High Level Pair on Transparency," the website added.
This November, Azerbaijan will host COP29. This decision was made at the COP28 plenary meeting held in Dubai on December 11 last year. Baku will become the center of the world and will receive about 70–80,000 foreign guests.
The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change is an agreement signed at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in June 1992 to prevent dangerous human interference with the climate system. COP—the Conference of the Parties—is the highest legislative body overseeing the implementation of the Framework Convention on Climate Change. There are 198 countries that are parties to the Convention. Unless the parties agree otherwise, the COP is held annually. The first COP event took place in March 1995 in Germany's Berlin with its secretariat in Bonn.
