BAKU, Azerbaijan, Apr. 22

By Nargiz Sadikhova - Trend:

Kazakhstan is planning to transport 1.6 million tons of cargo via river transport in 2020 compared to 1.5 million tons in 2019, Trend reports with reference to Kazakhstan’s Ministry of industry and Infrastructural Development.

Out of the planned transportation volume for 2020, 650,000 tons of cargo are to be transported to Russia.

“In general, the opening of the navigation period, depending on the sections of the waterways, is held within the period from April 1 to May 12. For timely start of this period, preparatory work was completed in full in 1Q2020. In particular, 3,814 navigational signs, three navigable locks and 147 vessels of the technical fleet were manufactured and repaired,” the report said.

Thus, on average, the navigation period in Kazakhstan is 196 days. River navigation is carried out in the Irtysh, Ural-Caspian and Ili-Balkhash basins.

Within the framework of Kazakhstan’s Nurly Zhol infrastructure development state program for 2020-2025, the overhaul of shipping locks is underway, which will allow to decrease the accident rate to 10.3 percent and to increase its capacities to 350 vessels a year.

Reconstruction of reinforced concrete structures (of 18,000 square meters) and lifting equipment (6 units) is planned this year. The work on shipping locks is going according to the work schedule.

The program also provides for renewal of 42 technical fleet vessels by 2025, which will reduce the total depreciation of the technical fleet from 78 percent to 55 percent.

The Nurly Zhol State Infrastructure Development Program for 2020–2025 aims to create an efficient and competitive transport infrastructure, develop transit and transportation services, and improve technological and institutional environment.
