Cargo transportation in Azerbaijan drops amid COVID-19 pandemic

The volume of cargo transshipment by all types of transport in Azerbaijan amounted to 111.2 million tons from January through July 2020, showing a drop of 16.7 percent compared to the same period of 2019, Trend reports citing the report of the State Statistical Committee.

A significant share of all transported cargo accounted for road transport, that is 58.7 percent or 65.3 million tons, noted the committee.

As reported, 30.4 percent of cargo turnover fell on pipelines. The volume of oil transported from the country dropped by 11 percent over the year, making up 20.9 million tons. The volume of gas transportation grew by 11.9 percent, amounting 17.8 billion cubic meters.

The share of maritime cargo movement made up 3.2 percent of cargo turnover, decreasing by 1.2 percent. In terms of volume, this figure amounted to 3.5 million tons. The oil sector accounted for 32.8 percent of all maritime transportation.

During the first seven months of this year, cargo movement by rail accounted for 7.5 percent of all traffic, making up 8.3 million tons. An annual growth amounted to 1.2 percent.

Transportation of goods by air accounted for 0.2 percent of all cargo movement in the country. As many as 228,900 tons of cargo were transported by air, which is 2.1 times more compared to the same period of last year.
