Azerbaijan welcoming TMTM's development in transit via Ukraine, Poland

BAKU, Azerbaijan, Mar.24

By Sadraddin Aghjayev - Trend:

A northern section of the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route (TMTM), passing through Ukraine and Poland, has begun to actively develop since 2018, Director-General of the Baku International Sea Trade Port Taleh Ziyadov said in an interview to foreign media, Trend reports.

According to Ziyadov, a decrease in the volume of cargo transportation was recorded in these directions in 2020.

“This was primarily due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Besides, the decline could also have resulted from the introduction of permits for the transit of cargo from Ukraine to China through Russia,” he noted. “However, this direction is very promising, especially in terms of communication with the countries of Central and Eastern Europe.”

“I believe that that for the further development of this direction, initiatives are needed that will in every possible way contribute to an increase in freight traffic along this route," added the port’s general director.

On February 20, 2014, in order to create favorable conditions for the implementation of the transit and transport potential of the Trans-Caspian route, a Coordination Committee for the development of TMTM was established with the participation of railway, port administrations and shipping companies of Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan and Georgia.

On April 12, 2016, an agreement was signed in Baku on the establishment of a single transport operator - the International Trans-Caspian Transport Consortium.
