In Aktau, on Tuesday, March 27, the first hearing on the criminal case relating to the riots in the city of Zhanaozen will be held, a spokesperson of the Kazakh Supreme Court Oksana Peters said today at a briefing.

In Aktau, on Tuesday, March 27, the first hearing on the criminal case relating to the riots in the city of Zhanaozen will be held, spokesperson of the Kazakh Supreme Court Oksana Peters said today at a briefing.

"Tomorrow at 10am in Aktau, the first hearing of criminal cases on the riots of December 16-17, 2011, in Zhanaozen will be held. The meeting will be held in the Arman centre where a large number of the participants can be present," said Peters.

There are 37 defendants, more than 100 victims and 45 witnesses in the case and also the criminal proceedings will be attended by six public prosecutors and 12 defenders, the reference material of the Supreme Court said.

"In order to ensure transparency and openness of the trial, as well as the overall unbiased consideration of the case, additional space has been made available for observers of the trial, including relatives of victims and defendants, representatives of human rights and other interested organisations. A press room will be in situ for media representatives," Peters said

"The defendants were charged with organising mass disorder accompanied by violence, killings, arson, destruction of property and violence against the authorities as well as robberies and thefts," said Peters.

She noted preventive measures in the form of arrests were taken in respect of 30 people and measures on not absconding and proper behaviour in respect of seven others.
