Criminal investigation launched after explosion at Kazakh mine

By Elena Kosolapova - Trend: A criminal investigation has been launched in Kazakhstan on the explosion at the Kazakhaltyn Company's Central mine in the Akmola region, Novosti-Kazakhstan reported.

Regional prosecutor Zhanibek Akbar told the agency about the investigation.

"A criminal investigation was launched under article 245 of the Criminal Code covering the violation of safety rules during mining and construction, resulting in the death of a person," the prosecutor said.

The incident occurred on the night of November 21 at the village of Zholymbet at Kazakhaltyn's branch Rudnik Zholymbet.

A miner took 24 kilogrammes of ammonite and 24 detonators for blasting. At a depth of 430 metres he was passing by an electric substation when the explosion took place.

Work at the Central mine has been suspended and the staff of 60 miners evacuated.
