Kazakhstan names completion date for reconstruction of Atyrau-Astrakhan highway

ASTANA, Kazakhstan, October 30. The completion of the reconstruction of the Atyrau (Kazakhstan)-Russian border (Astrakhan city) highway, which is part of the international corridor Astrakhan-Atyrau-Aktau-Turkmenistan border, is planned for 2024, Trend reports.

The highway is critical for ensuring transportation ties between Kazakhstan's western and northern regions and the Russian Federation.

Since 2019, work on the Atyrau-Astrakhan project has been ongoing. The overall length of the section is 277 kilometers. segment No. 5 (833-853 km) will be operational in 2020, while segment No. 6 (853-893 km) will be operational by the end of current year.

The second stage, with a length of 217 km, began construction in 2020 with the assistance of an EBRD financing. Traffic is currently open on the lowest layer of the pavement at 166 of 217 kilometers. It is expected to provide transport throughout the sector before the end of the year.

The Minister of Transport of Kazakhstan, Marat Karabayev, who visited several sections of the road, noted during meetings with contractors that the country's leadership and the Ministry of Transport pay special attention to the road reconstruction project.

In this regard, Karabayev asked not to slow down the pace of construction in order to meet the scheduled commissioning date of the route.
