BAKU, Azerbaijan, December 1. Kyrgyzstan will receive financial assistance from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) to modernize its railway infrastructure, Trend reports citing the Cabinet of Ministers of Kyrgyzstan.

On the sidelines of the Central Asia Investment Forum in Tokyo, the Kyrgyz Ministry of Finance and the EBRD signed a $12 million agreement for the development and modernization of Kyrgyzstan's railway infrastructure.

The chairman of Kyrgyz Cabinet of Ministers Akylbek Japarov stressed that for countries like Kyrgyzstan, which do not have access to the sea, it is necessary to develop road and rail infrastructure.

"We need new rail routes that will connect us with other countries and allow us to integrate our economy into the global supply chain," Japarov said.

Meanwhile, the Central Asia Investment Forum organized by the EBRD and the Government of Japan, in cooperation with Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC), Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), provides an overview of sectors with strong investment potential, ranging from trade to energy and infrastructure, and a focus on sustainability.
