BAKU, Azerbaijan, December 26. Tajikistan’s domestic oil and natural gas production numbers are nearly negligible, Trend reports citing the Asian Development Bank (ADB).
The ADB notes that Tajikistan’s fossil fuel production has historically focused on coal, with oil and gas having been exploited to a lesser extent due to the lack of domestically available resources.
"Annual production reaches less than 17 tons of oil and less than 1 billion cubic meters of natural gas. However, the government of Tajikistan plans to modernize and conduct a technical re-equipment of its upstream infrastructure, as well as develop new oil and natural gas fields", the message said.
Due to lack of domestic oil reserves, about 90 percent of oil products are imported into Tajikistan from Russia on a preferential basis (without paying export customs duties).
Meanwhile, Tajikistan imported 645,000 tons of oil products in the firs 10 months of this year, which is an increase of 30.1 percent over the same period in 2021.
