Turkmenistan's agricultural sector receives boost from FAO equipment transfer

ASHGABAT, Turkmenistan, February 26. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) has transferred water intake pumps to the Dashoguz and Ahal regions of Turkmenistan, Trend reports.

According to an official source, 9 centrifugal horizontal sectional pumps with a capacity of 22 kW through 55 kW will pump water over a distance of 150 kilometers through 200 kilometers.

Five pumps will supply the water of the Karakum River through the main water supply in the Central Karakums, and four pumps will contribute to providing water to remote areas of farms during periods of low water.

With the help of pumps, irrigation water will be continuously supplied to the fields of the Andalyp farm in the Akdepe district of the Dashoguz region with an area of about 1000 hectares (this is 25,000 people), serve remote villages and pastures of the Yerbent livestock farm in the Ak Bugday district of the Ahal region (500,000 hectares of pastures, about 20 settlements, 25,000 people).

Water will also be supplied to the water pipelines of Mary, Lebap, Balkan and Dashoguz regions and provide water to 6 livestock farms, each of which has an area of about 100,000 hectares and a population of about 10,000 people.

Meanwhile, the equipment was delivered thanks to the financial and technical support of the FAO and Global Environment Facility (GEF) regional project 'Integrated Natural Resources Management in Drought-prone and Salt-affected Agricultural Production Landscapes in Central Asia and Türkiye (CACILM2)' in close cooperation with the Ministry of Agriculture and Environmental Protection of Turkmenistan, as well as local government authorities.
