Uzbekistan cancels zero customs duty on sugar import

BAKU, Azerbaijan, Jan. 4

By Klavdiya Romakayeva - Trend:

Uzbekistan has again set the excise tax on sugar import at 20 percent and canceled the zero customs duty, Trend reports referring to the press service of the government of Uzbekistan.

This follows from the amendments to article 289 of the Tax Code and the presidential decree.

This norm will apply to goods with the TN VED 1701 99 code: white sugar without flavoring or coloring additives.

It was noted that the conditions for importing sugar into Uzbekistan change annually and sometimes twice a year.

Thus, in 2017, after the devaluation of the soum, both Khorazm-Shakar and Angren-Shakar sugar factories in Uzbekistan ceased their activities due to a drop in demand for the products of enterprises. Then the borders for foreign sugar were opened, but at the beginning of 2019, when the factories resumed work, they closed again.

Starting from 2020, white sugar imports to Uzbekistan have again been subject to a 20 percent excise tax, but in April, due to the pandemic, it was returned to the zero rates again until the end of the year.
