Uzbekistan receives two seismic stations from US

BAKU, Azerbaijan, June 3

By Klavdiya Romakayeva - Trend:

Seismic stations received from the US will be installed in two districts of the Jizzakh region of Uzbekistan for a better understanding of the acoustical and infrastructural features of the site, Trend reports referring to the Embassy of the US in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.

On June 2, the embassy in Tashkent delivered the rented equipment worth about $14,000 to the Republican Center for Seismic Prognostic Monitoring (RCSPM) under the Ministry of Emergency Situations of Uzbekistan.

In preparation for the installation of a permanent station later this year, the RCSPM, in conjunction with the University of California San Diego (UCSD), will install two temporary seismic stations in Karasai and Koitash districts in the Jizzakh region to better understand the acoustic and infrastructural features of the site.

It is reported that the US State Department will purchase equipment for the permanent station, which is slated to be built in Karasai by the end of this year and will finance installation work.

The permanent station at Karasai will become part of the Global Seismic Network (GSN), which consists of 152 stations. GSN is jointly administered by the University of California San Diego and the Joint Research Institute for Seismology.

With the support of IRIS and NSF, UCSD operates one-third of GSN stations, of which the proposed station in Uzbekistan will be part.
