US-Polish missile nothing to do with Iran, says Mottaki

The US-Polish missile shield agreement had nothing to do with Iran, Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki said Sunday.

"This is something between the US and Russia and we recommend both countries to settle the issue in a peaceful manner," Mottaki was quoted by official news agency IRNA as saying.

The US and Poland signed an amendment to a US missile shield deal during a visit by US Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton to Krakow on Saturday.

Clinton said the agreement was purely a defensive system, not directed at Russia, but would protect the Polish people and all of Europe from missile threats, especially from Iran.

Mottaki rejected the charges, saying "the people in the region and in the world no longer take the remarks by Mrs Clinton very seriously."
