EU's Ashton says optimistic about Iran-P5+1 talks

European Union Foreign Policy Chief Catherine Ashton has expressed optimism about the new talks between Iran and the six major world powers, Press TV reported.

"We hope from the contacts we've had that this process can now move forward swiftly and seriously," Ashton told reporters in Denmark on Saturday.

On Thursday, the P5+1 -- the US, China, Russia, France, Britain plus Germany-- announced their readiness to resume multifaceted talks with Iran.

Ashton, who chairs the P5+1, said that EU and Iranian senior officials will meet "in the next day or so" to agree on the date or time for the talks.

This is while Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu announced on Saturday that Istanbul will be hosting the multifaceted talks between Iran and the P5+1 in early April.

Two rounds of multifaceted talks were held in Geneva, Switzerland in December 2010 and in Istanbul, Turkey in January 2011.

The US, Israel and some of their allies accuse Tehran of pursuing military objectives in its nuclear energy program.

Iran has refuted the allegations, arguing that as a signatory to the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and a member of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Tehran is entitled to peaceful use of nuclear technology.
