Unemployment in Iran decreases

Iran’s Statistical Center has published its annual report about employment situation in the country, which covers the first quarter of the current fiscal year, from March 20 to June 21, 2018.

According to the report, the number of unemployed Iranians aged over 10 years ‎reached 3.32 million by June 21.‎

The unemployment rate among Iranians aged over 10 years in the mentioned period was 12.1 percent, 0.5 percent less compared to the preceding year.

All Iranians aged over 10 years, who worked at least one hour a week, or temporary left their work during the survey week, were included as "employed labor force" in the report.

The country's labor force participation rate stood at 41.1 percent (0.5 percent more than the preceding year), equal to 27.39 million.

The participation rate is the percentage of working-age persons in an economy who are employed or unemployed but looking for a job.

Unemployment among men (2.251 million) and women (1.071 million) was also around 10.3 and 19.2 percent, respectively, during the period.

According to the report, the country's labor force participation rate for men (21.82 million) and women (5.56 million) was 65.3 percent and 16.8 percent, respectively by June 2018.

The country's urban and rural unemployment rate in the mentioned period stood at 13.6 and 7.9 percent, respectively.

The participation rate for country’s urban (20.17 million) and rural (7.21 million) areas also reached 40.2 percent and 43.9 percent, respectively in the same period.

The report indicates that over half of Iran’s labor force was employed in the service sector (12.05 million or 50.1 percent).

About 18.7 percent of the country's labor force was employed in the agriculture sector (4.49 million), while 31.2 percent were employed in the industry (7.52 million) sector.

In total 24.1 million people were employed in various sectors in the country by June 21 (36.1 percent).

Iran’s south western Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari province had the highest unemployment rate in the spring 2018 (21.6 percent), meanwhile central Semnan province witnessed the lowest unemployment rate in the period (7.1 percent).
