Over 5,000 illegal wells filled with water in Iran

As many as 5,518 illegal wells have been filled with water this year in Iran (Iranian year starts March 21, 2018) and there was decrease in cases when 21.2 million cubic meters of water was additionally illegally obtained from legal wells, said Javad Meybodi, director of Water and Wastewater Systems Utilization and Protection of Water at Iran’s Ministry of Energy, Mehr News Agency reported.

He said that the control of water resources at the country level is carried out in Iran via 1,167 hydro-meteorological stations.

He added that 44,572 illegal wells with capacity of 2.257 billion cubic meters have been filled with water since 2015.

During this period, 24,710 water meters were installed on wells that were commissioned in agriculture sphere, he said, adding that 2,064 water meters were installed this year.

Meybodi said that investigation commissions were established in all provinces of Iran in connection with underground waters, adding that a list of unlicensed wells that were drilled until 2006 is being prepared.

He noted that discussions are being held to take certain steps in this direction.
