BAKU, Azerbaijan, March 25. Investments in Iran's fisheries sector are expected to increase by 50 percent this year (from March 20, 2024, through March 2025) compared to last year (from March 21, 2023, through March 19, 2024), Iran's Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Chairman of Fisheries Organization Hossein Hosseini said, Trend reports.
According to Hossein, 300 trillion rials (about $7.14 billion) are planned to be invested in Iran's fisheries sector this year where 200 trillion rials (about $4.76 billion) were invested in Iran's fishing sector last year.
The deputy minister noted that Iran plans to grow and catch 1.5 million tons of fish in the current year and thus, 700,000 tons of fish and fish products worth $300 million are expected to be exported from Iran this year.
To note, Iran catches and grows, on average, more than 1.25 million tons of fish per year. About 700,000 tons are extracted, and more than 550,000 tons are grown.
At present, 347 cooperatives in the north and south of the country are engaged in fishing. 136 thousand people are engaged in fishing in the country. Of these, 9,500 people are fishing in the Caspian Sea in the north of the country and 126,500 in the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman in the south.
