Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has stressed the importance of the development of the country's southern coasts of Makran and Sea of Oman.

"This region [Makran Coasts and Sea of Oman] is an epicenter of the Navy's mission, and I will provide the government with necessary recommendations on the necessity of reviving the region's status," the leader's official website quoted him as saying Nov. 29 at a meeting with the navy staff on the occasion of navy day in Iran.

"Today, our nation's capabilities and achievements especially in the Army have soared high and with a strong will and a trust in heavenly providence, a better future will be in the horizons," he added.

He further praised the navy for its achievements over the past three decades.

"The advances in the Navy could not have been as outstanding as it is now; before the Revolution [1979], the sea had been downplayed in its prestige, grandeur, and strategic role in international politics; now however, the Navy have walked a long road, yet many miles should be covered to reach the optimal place," he said.

He called for access to open seas and said access to the international waters provides defensive advantages which should be taken serious by the officials.

On the same day Iranian Army's Naval Force received homemade anti-ship cruise missile dubbed "Ghadir".

The missiles were handed over to the navy Nov. 29 during a ceremony attended by Iran's Defense Minister Hossein Dehghan and Navy Commander Rear Admiral Habibollah Sayyari in Tehran.
