A top adviser to Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has vowed support for Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's government.
"Bashar al-Asad was elected as Syrian president two years ago. He must complete his seven-year term as president," Tasnim news agency quoted Ali Akbar Velayati as saying at a meeting with visiting Swiss Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, Yves Rossier, in Tehran.
"Iran gives support for Syrian legitimate government," he further added.
Velayati further called for protecting Syria's territorial integrity adding that only Syrian people should decide about their fate.
Over 250,000 people have died and at least 11 million have been displaced in Syria, since the Syrian crisis broke out in 2011.
