Five men were hanged in Iran's southern province of Fars this morning, the country's Mehr news agency reported Sept. 18.

Four of the persons were executed in Shiraz city in public, meanwhile the fifth man was hanged in Marvdasht, also in public.

The Iranian court has sentenced them to death by hanging on rape, kidnapping, armed robbery and drinking alcohol charges.

The persons, whose names were not disclosed, were executed upon the order of Shiraz Revolutionary court. The head of Iran's judiciary, Sadeq Amoli Larijani had approved the regional court's sentence.

Murder, rape, armed robbery and the trafficking of drugs in quantities in excess of 5 kilograms are among the crimes punishable by death in Iran.

Iran ranks second, after China, in terms of the number of executions in the world. During the last year, more than 600 people were hanged in Iran in total.
