Tehran, Iran, June 17

By Mehdi Sepahvand – Trend:

Two people died in explosion of a gas pipe in the west of Tehran, Iran’s capital city.

The two were workers of a subway construction company, Jame Jam Online news agency reported June 17.

The incident happened at 4:30 local time, when construction tools hit the gas pipe.

A big hole was opened on the pipe, causing flames that went up 20 meters, the report says.

The area’s power and gas supply, as well as fiber optic connection have been cut as restoration operations are underway.

Eqbal Shakeri, director of Tehran Municipality’s Civil Engineering Council, cited old-fashioned construction methods and equipment as the main reasons of the incident.

A similar incident rocked Tehran six years ago, causing heavy damage, but no casualties.
