Unesco chief criticises NATO attack on Libya broadcaster

The July attack by NATO on a Libyan state broadcast facility as unacceptable, stated Unesco General Director Irina Bokova on Monday.

The head of the United Nations organization for education, science and culture cited UN resolution 1738 from the year 2006 condemning violence against journalists and media workers in conflict situations, dpa reported.

She also quoted the Geneva Convention, identifying journalists as civilians, even when they are cooperating in propaganda efforts.

Silencing the media is never a solution, and they should never be the target of military action, Bokova said.

According to Unesco, three media workers were killed and 21 were injured in the July 30 attack on the Libyan broadcast facility.

The NATO military alliance justified the attack on the basis of protecting civilian population. The action against the pro-Gaddafi satellite television, NATO said, was a means of preventing the intimidation of the Libyan population and calls for violence against civilians.
