Libyan Extremists destroy historical library and a Sufi Shrine

Libyan Conservative Islamists has burned down a historical library that contains thousands of rare books, on Saturday 25 August, according to a Libyan military official.

The conservative Islamists used grenades and loaders to destroy the library, which was attached to a mosque and a shrine of one of the Sufi figures in Libya that dates back to the 15th Century at the city of Zliten. The Shrine was destroyed too, as it was hailed by them as a prohibited religious shrine, Ahram Online quoted Reuters as reporting.

The Military official said that the Extreme Salafists took advantage of the busy security men and took the shrine down along with the historical library.

The Mosque's Sheikh expressed his anger at the attack on such spiritual shrine and library, saying that he had to fled from the place weeks ago after he received death threats from the extremists, who destroyed the Shrine.
