Australian Prime Minister Rudd to attend Japan's G8 meeting

( dpa ) - Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd is expected to attend this year's G8 summit in Japan as an observer.

"I understand that the government of Japan has announcements to make on that," Rudd told reporters Friday in Canberra when questioned about reports he would be at the July meeting in Hokkaido. "I don't wish to pre-empt formal statements by the government of Japan."

The United States, Canada, Britain, France, Germany, Italy, Japan and Russia comprise the G8.
