( dpa ) - The US Marine Corps is investigating a video posted on the internet site YouTube which appeared to show a marine flinging a small puppy off the edge of a cliff.

The video, in which the marine in full battle gear is identified as a soldier based in Hawaii, was removed from the US-owned video site early Tuesday due to a "terms of use violation," according to a banner on the Web site.

Unclear from the video were the location of the cliff and the fate of the animal.

"The video is shocking and deplorable and is contrary to the high standards we expect of every Marine," said a statement issued Monday by Major Christopher Perrine of the Marine Corps base in Oahu, Hawaii. "We have initiated an investigation. We do not tolerate this type of behavior and will take appropriate action."

The statement was posted on the Marine Corps' internet website.

The video shows a marine in full combat gear holding the lovable pooch by the scruff of its neck and then flinging the yelping puppy off a rocky ledge.

Off-camera another marine can be heard saying, "That's mean, that was mean."

Perrine cited numerous other stories of Marines adopting pets and bringing them home from Iraq, and helping to arrange medical care for sick Iraqi children.

"Those are the stories that exemplify what we stand for and how most Marines behave," he said.
