Solana hopes to meet Iranian negotiator for talks

( Xinhua )- European Union top diplomat Javier Solana voiced his hope on Sunday that he would like to meet Iranian chief nuclear negotiator in the months to come.

"I hope to be able to meet soon" Iranian negotiator Saeed Jalili, Solana told the Brussels Forum Conference.

Solana said he did not expect a meeting within days as nothing dramatic would happen following Iran's last week elections, adding a meeting might take place in "30 days to 90 days."

His remarks came one day after Iran said talks with "the countries of the 5 plus 1 is over", referring to the five permanent members of the UN Security Council and Germany.

Iran, which insists that its nuclear program is for civilian use rather than developing nuclear weapons as the West fears, has refused to suspend uranium enrichment as a precondition for resuming talks.

Solana held rounds of talks with Iran for nearly two years, aiming in vain to persuade the Islamic nation to suspend enrichment for a package of political, trade and economic incentives.

The UN Security Council stepped up two weeks ago sanctions against Iran as Tehran has turned a deaf ear to calls to halt its uranium enrichment.
