US President George W Bush is to visit Thailand in early August to mark the 175th anniversary of bilateral relations and deliver a farewell speech to Asia, a Thai Foreign Ministry spokesman said Sunday, the dpa reported.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Tharit Jarungvat said the US president and first lady are to be in Thailand as official guests of the government on August 6-7.

Thai Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej will host a dinner for the Bushes on August 6.

Bush will hold bilateral talks with Samak and commemorate the two countries' 175 years of bilateral relations.

"President Bush will also deliver a speech on Asia while he is Bangkok," said Tharit. "The importance of the speech is that it will be his last speech on Asia during his presidency."

Bush is stopping in Thailand en route to China where he is scheduled to arrive August 8 to attend the opening of the Olympic Games in Beijing.

US-Thai bilateral relations date back to the signing of the Treaty of Amity and Commerce on March 20, 1833, during the Presidency of Andrew Jackson, and Thailand's King Phra Nang Klao, or King Rama III of the Chakri Dynasty.
