Ukrainian MPs Revere Death’s Memory in Caucasus

Ukraine, Kiev, 2 September / Trend corr. Z.Novosvitskiy / Ukrainian Supreme Rada revered the memory of death as the result of the recent developments in Caucasus. Viktor Yanukovich, Leader of Regions party fraction, suggested revering the memory of death with a minute silence.

Regions party stated that Ukraine should not actively support any side in the Russian-Georgian conflict. However, Yanukovich called on to recognize independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia in due time, following Russia.

At the night of 8 August, large-scale military operations were launched in the self-declared South Ossetia republic. The Georgian troops entered Tskhinvali. Later the Russian troops entered the city and drove the Georgian forces back to the Georgian territory.

On 12 August, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev announced that he has decided to end operations to compel Georgia to peace.

It was decided to keep Russian peacemakers and international observers in the territory of Georgia.
