Inspector General of Police in Pakistani capital Kaleem Imam said Wednesday that 25 significant terrorists had been arrested, Xinhua reported.

The private Geo News TV quoted Kaleem Imam as saying that six of the arrested terrorists were most wanted. The arrested terrorists were planning subversive activities in the southern port city of Karachi and eastern Punjab province's capital Lahore, he said.

Security forces launched a major offensive against militants in Swat, Dir, Buner and other districts in North West Frontier Province (NWFP) late April when the Taliban militants expanded in the area regardless of a peace deal with the provincial government of NWFP.

Around 1,600 militants have been killed in the ongoing operation in the northwest. A host of terrorist attacks have stricken some major cities in the country, where security has been put on high alert.

Police in Islamabad have been cracking down on criminals and a large number of suspects have been nabbed, according to local press reports.
